Scenario C: Synchronization between the MOTIF and AW16G using MIDI Clock

You will need to have a good working understanding of the MOTIF (especially the sequencing operations) and the basic record operations of the AW16G.

In this scenario, you have even greater control over getting your Motif tracks on to the AW16G, as well as the ability to go back at a later date and overdub new audio in synch with your original performance.

STEP 1. When synchronization between the MOTIF and AW16G is required, MIDI CLOCK will be used and the AW16G will ALWAYS be the master MIDI CLOCK source. The MOTIF Sequencer Tempo will slave to the clock being generated by the AW16G via MIDI connection. You will not be able to set your tempo independently in the MOTIF so you will need to create a tempo map in the AW16G.

STEP 2. The MAIN Motif L-R outputs and Assignable L-R outputs are connected to AW16G channel inputs 3-4 and 5-6. MOTIF Assignable L-R outputs do not route through the Reverb, Chorus or Variation effects in the MOTIF, but you can use the insert effect on these outputs. Assignable L-R can be configured as stereo pairs or as 2 discreet mono outputs.

STEP 3. The AW16G needs to be set to the following settings internally (Press [UTILITY] mode button on front of AW16G):

AW16G Midi Menu

  • The AW16G should be set for CLK for MIDI Clock.
  • MMC-Midi Machine Control should be set to MASTER (AW16G will control the MOTIF)

STEP 4. The Motif needs to be set to the following settings internally:

Motif Midi Menu

Set the Motif's MIDI Sync ([UTILITY]/[F5]/[SF3]) to MIDI and the MOTIF will slave to the MIDI clock generated from the AW16G via MIDI.

NOTES: If you decide to use MTC as your clock, it will be necessary to set the Time Signature and Tempo in both the AW16G and the Motif to the same. For example: Set both to 4/4 time and 120 bpm or whatever for your song this is done on the TEMPO MAP of the AW16G and the main Song screen of the Motif. The Power User guide will give you information on how to set exact Start times so that when the AW16G hits measure 1: beat 1 clock 0, the Motif will start. (See the paragraph on "Set the START Point of a SONG"...it really makes sense to leave room on the AW16G for a count in).
