The Motif Studio (AW1600/AW16G + Motif)
Scenario B: Recording a Motif Performance to AW1600/AW16G on separate tracks
Back to the Tutorials

You've been playing a nice Motif Performance for a while and now you want to record stuff into the AW1600/AW16G with each instrument on a separate track so you can have more control over parts and effects as the song progresses.

You’re going to need two more 1/4 inch cords for this because you ‘re going to use the Assignable, as well as Main audio outputs on Motif.

Step 1. Connect Motif's main L/R audio outputs to AW1600/AW16G Inputs 3-4. (Inputs 1 & 2 are XLR input only). Turn Input knobs 3-4 fully to the Left (Line).

Step 2. Step 2. Connect Motif's Assignable Outs to AW1600/AW16G Inputs 5-6 and turn these Input knobs fully to the Left (Line) also.

Step 3. Route the different Voices in your Performance to individual outputs on Motif so that they can be recorded onto individual tracks on the AW1600/AW16G:

While in Performance mode on Motif press F3 [VOICE] and note down which sounds are currently assigned to which Parts. Press F1 to return to the main PLAY page.

Press the EDIT button then F3 [OUTSEL]. (If you do not see F3 [OUTSEL] on the display press the [TRACK SELECT] button and select Track 1.)

The display will now show you which Parts (i.e. which sounds) are currently being sent out through which outputs.

Now select different outputs for each of the Parts.

NOTE 1: Motif's main L/R outputs can use Motif's full complement of effects, whereas Voices you send to the Assignable1-2 outputs will come out essentially 'dry' (i.e. without any effects) unless one of these Voices happens to use its Insert effect.

NOTE 2: You can see which Part is using its Insert effect from the main OUTSEL page (it'll say "on" alongside the InsEF parameter). If you want to use the Insert effect on another Part go to [F6-SF1] from the main Performance page.

Step 4. On AW16G press [SONG] repeatedly until LIST is highlighted. Use the cursor to select New. (You can now also name your song, or do this later if you want.)

Step 5. Create a Tempo map in AW1600/AW16G:

Press [SONG] repeatedly until TEMPO is highlighted. In this Scenario you’ll probably just set the METER, and the TEMPO. If you're playing a rhythmic Motif Performance, i.e. one that uses arpeggiated drums or synth parts, match the TEMPO on Motif and AW16G. Now, the bar counts on AW1600/AW16G will match the tempo of your song. On the graphic you can see we have set the tempo to 137 BPM.

Step 6. On AW1600/AW16G assign your inputs to record tracks:

Under the Quick Navigate section press [RECORD]. This will probably default to DIRECT but if it doesn’t press [RECORD] repeatedly until DIRECT is highlighted.

Press the Input Select 3 button then the Track 1 button. On the screen you will see a line drawn between Input and Track numbers. Do the same between Input Select 4 and Track 2, Input Select 5 and Track 3, Input Select 6 and Track 4.

Levels can also be adjusted by pressing and holding each Input select button. With the cursor over the virtual knob on the screen you can now adjust the input level. (If you’re not hearing anything make sure the Track faders and the main fader are both up!)

Step 7. Go into Record on AW1600/AW16G, and start playing on Motif.

What you played will have been recorded on Tracks AW16G 3, 4, 5 & 6. You can now overdub a guide vocal, or a bass part, or anything else you want on other tracks on the AW1600/AW16G.

NOTES: While this is a more controllable scenario in terms of having some instruments on separate tracks, you still won't be able to substitute a new drum track, or add more sequenced drums from Motif without a lot fiddling around. This scenario will let you mix your basic demo with a little more sophistication in terms of levels and (AW1600/AW16G) effects.
