Back
to Motif Studio Setups
You've found a nice Motif Performance using which
you've come up with the beginnings of a song. You simply want to
record this into the AW16G and start overdubbing one or two tracks
to see if the song is worth perservering with, or just to get the
idea down.
Step 1. Connect Motif's main L/R audio
outputs to AW16G Inputs 3-4. (Inputs 1 & 2 are XLR input only).
Turn Input knobs 3-4 fully to the Left (Line).
Step 2. On AW16G press [SONG] repeatedly
until LIST is highlighted. Use the cursor to select New. (You can
now also name your song, or do this later if you want.)

Step 3.
On AW16G create a Tempo Map:
Press [SONG] repeatedly until TEMPO is highlighted. In this Scenario
you’ll probably just set the METER, and the TEMPO.
If you're playing a rhythmic Motif Performance, i.e. one that uses
arpeggiated drums or synth parts, match the TEMPO on Motif and AW16G.
Now, the bar counts on AW16G will match the tempo of your song. On the
graphic you can see we have set the tempo to 137 BPM.

If you’re not sure of the tempo of the arpeggiated drums/synths
on your Motif Performance, press F6 [ARP].

Step 4.
On AW16G assign your inputs to record tracks:
Under the Quick Navigate section press [RECORD]. This will probably
default to DIRECT but if it doesn’t press [RECORD] repeatedly
until DIRECT is highlighted.
Press the Input Select 3 button then theTrack 1 button. On the screen
you will see a line drawn between Input and Track numbers. Do the same
between Input Select 4 and Track 2.

Levels can also be adjusted by pressing
and holding each Input select button. With the cursor over the virtual
knob on the screen you can now adjust the input level. (If you’re
not hearing anything make sure Tracks 1 & 2 faders and the main
fader are both up!)

Step 5. On AW16G press [REC] and
[PLAY], then start playing Motif.
NOTE: If
your Motif Performance uses arpeggiated drums or synth parts it
might be a good idea to hit a note on Motif and initiatethe rhythmic
parts which can then act as a simple count-in.
To hear what you’ve recorded, under Quick Navigate press
[MONITOR]. On AW16G transport controls press RTZ (Return to Zero)
then [PLAY].
What you played will have been recorded on AW16G Tracks 1 &
2 in the same stereo mix as you heard on Motif. You can now overdub
a guide vocal, or a bass part, or anything else you want on other
tracks on the AW16G.
NOTE: If
your initial recording was a combination of drums plus a couple
of instrumental parts you won't be able to separate these out 'later
on.' You won't be able to substitute a new drum track, and nor will
you will be able to add more sequenced drums from Motif....without
a lot of fiddling around! This may not be a problem at all but just
so as you know.
